21 lessons for life

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully

TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR. When you say, 'I love you ,' mean it.

FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye

SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

NINE. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

TEN.. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives.

TWELVE. Talk slowly but think quickly.

THIRTEEN. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'

FOURTEEN. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

FIFTEEN. Say 'bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN. When you lose, don't lose the lesson!

SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

NINETEEN. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

TWENTY.. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

TWENTY-ONE. Spend some time alone.

I skipped #6. We were engaged for like a minute. Okay, a month. But it worked out pretty well. :)

And re: fifteen, I don't do this anymore. We have developed our own system.

You have a sneezing system????

Okay, it's not officially a system. But we decided that we didn't need to bring religion into our sneezing, so we say, "I care about you" instead of "bless you." I think the acknowledgment is the biggest part for me. Of course, a few times now I'm said that to coworkers out of habit and they look at me a little funny.

Wow, that's interesting. I say gesundheit to people that I am not outwardly religious towards. Isn't "I care about you" a little long?

It is a little long, but you can say it in one breath.

We talked about Gesundeit, but I think it means "God bless you." So it's the same.

Oh! Another one that is good is the Spanish one! Salud! (To your health!)

If you're truly in love, just do it. A six-month engagement indicates hesitancy to commit.

What if you are planning a big wedding, though? That would be a good reason for a 6-month or 1-year engagement.

What does that kind of wedding represent?

Those are originally from this book, which I own and love and read through often and mark with a pencil the ones I've done, do, or want to do. :) Actually, I'm using some of them for my new Mission 101 list, because I'm starting over and need to change a bunch of the goals.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.
Sorry, love is something that has to develop. You can have knowledge that you'll love someone at first sight, but not actual love, with the exception of maybe your own child. Other than that, interesting list!

How about love at first handwriting? Would you believe in that?

hehe. Er, nope, don't think so. Although, I'm not sure how that would work. The first time you see somone's handwriting you love them? Or do you love the handwriting? ;)

I used to always dream that someone would see my handwriting and become curiouser and curiouser about me. Of course, it would be my handwriting that created the first intrigue, and then what I would say that would further mystify and enrapture them.

That sounds pretty different. Would you have been writing them secret admirer notes or something like that?
