Take-A-Penny/Give-A-Penny

Yesterday I stopped at the gas station for milk on the way home from work. I noticed the take-a-penny-give-a-penny container/tray/thing near the register and made me think about it. Probably a little too much. This poll was born.

Maybe because your money is worth more than ours? People leave pennies all over the place and treat them like they aren't worth anything. It makes me sad for pennies.

I admit that I don't use the pennies in the trays very often. I do feel like I'm taking it from someone else. But if the order totals like $12.02, I will take pennies if needed. A lot of times, the cashier will go ahead and do that anyway. I am sure I give more pennies than I take; it all balances out in some sort of zen-like way.

I was thinking about your penny icon when I made this post! I have been thinking if more people will be taking pennies now that the economy stinks.

I took the picture of the pennies myself. Aren't I special? At least, I think I did. I can't really remember anymore.

I predict that people will still treat pennies like they are garbage, even in our failing economy.

That is a good prediction. I will continue to treat pennies like they are precious treasure.

Usually when I take it, it's because the cashier has taken it for me. I always forget to sort pennies out when I leave, though, so I don't think I've ever managed to give pennies to it... and I probably wouldn't unless my 4 penny in purse quota was filled.

I haven't used cash to buy something in so long... But from what I can remember, there were several times when I'd buy something that comes out to 1 or 2 cents over a dollar, and the cashier will grab the pennies from the tray for me. I've never grabbed a penny from the tray myself. As for leaving a penny, I don't think I've ever done that either, but in some cases where there's a donation jar of some sort, I'll drop all my change in there (except maybe quarters) rather than carrying it around.

My old sandwich shop in Troy had a change cup next to the register (they were equal opportunity for all coins, not just pennies) which I'd use if I was a few pennies off of exact change. Usually the next day, I'd drop off the same amount of change I'd borrowed the day before back into the cup.

I've never personally taken from a give/take penny jar. But when paying with cash, the casheir has grabbed a penny to even things out since I never carry pennies. Because I personally never have pennies also, if they hand me pennies in change, or if I have any on me, I usually drop them in.
