Farm Show Pictures

I promised pictures of the Pennsylvania Farm Show, so here they are! We went on the opening day this year, which was the 10th of January. The whole set of pictures is here, on flickr, but here is a preview:

This Alpaca was so cool. He was sired by a very famous alpaca(?!) named SIRIUS BLACK! FOR SERIOUS! :-P We thought that was pretty cool. Sirius Black even has his own website: http://www.pucara-alpacas.com/siriusblack.html Check it out - he is gorgeous.

Me in the stocks. :-)

Goats!

Mommy piggy and baby piggies!

Cow who was being shorn (which is why she is in that cage-thing).

OMG SO CUTE, but KINDA CREEPY EYES! :-P

I love the silly Catherine picture.

And actually, I love alpacas. I always thought Z would get me one, but I have since heard they are expensive to buy.

Ahh... they are not so bad! You can get one for a few hundred dollars (300-400) if you are not looking for good breading. Elizabeth really wants to have an alpaca farm someday, so she was getting all kinds of information. And you can sell their wool to pay for food costs, etc.

Well, $300-$400 is way beyond what I can afford right now. That seems like a total luxury. Maybe someday.

Haha, yay alpacas. Maybe I need to make one of ours into an icon. Until then my usual llama will have to suffice. also, don't be drawn into that whole "you can break even on wool and stuff" line, you need to do it as a hobby basically, farming in the 21st century is a lousy way to try and make money even with something unusual, trust me!

Well, my sister wants to raise them so she can use the wool instead of having to buy it. She does some amazing stuff with the fibers and she wants to start spinning, too.

Having a couple for yourself would probably let you break even on costs of the yarn versus feed and vet bills, but even then you have to do it for the love of the whole thing.

Oh, definitely. She is totally into it. Turns out some of the people we were talking to know a local alpaca farmer(?) and those people know my dad, so my sister might get to go hang out on their farm and help them out.

That's cool and always good to be totally sure you like the whole process! I do love them :)

I've gotta ask you, how do YOU pronounce "Alpaca"?
~ Al-PACK-uh
~ all-pock-uh
~ something else

Most people say the first one, though I think technically it should be all-pah-cah (just like softer more spanish type syllables)

That's what I thought. :)
