Bad, bad, bad Bad, bad, bad
This is the BRAND NEW AS OF TODAY traffic signal that they are putting at the end of the road. My worst fears confirmed.
Mysterious thingies Mysterious thingies
Anyone have any idea what these things are? They are on top of an apartment building in Hershey. If it helps, the building is around here.
Cool bumper magnet Cool bumper magnet
I saw this 2 weeks ago and thought it was cool. Can anyone identify all the symbols? :-) (edit: They are here if anyone is interested.

(vacation pictures to come as soon as I have access to my yahoo ID again. Seriously, it should not take 2 years to get into an account. sheesh.)

I hope this does not come off as too ignorant, but what does the moon represent? Is the "e" for gender equality? And what is the "i"? The rest (all four) I know about. :P

How come the traffic light is bad?

The crescent moon is the symbol of Islam, but I only know that because I worked in the Interfaith Center at RIT. I guessed the same thing about the E and I am not sure about the I either. I'm hoping for some of my more worldly friends to put in their 2 cents. :)

As for the traffic light, it is one of the 2 intersections that have to go through on my way to work (I live at the end of Somerset if you look at the map and work west on Derry street). So, I make a right out of my street, and another right where this light will be. The stop sign makes things much easier for me. It's 2 lefts on the way home. I'm just hoping that it won't make things take longer and be more annoying. It's also a sign that they expect a lot more traffic through the intersection which I'm not happy about either.

I think they e may have something to do with GLBT, because of the male/female symbols?

My best guess about the i is that it looks like a totem pole? So perhaps is taken as nature beliefs/paganism/ anything not mainstream?

ooh, yeah, that makes sense!

Hm. I see those 'coexist' bumper stickers all the time. Although they're usually blue. You needs to move to a more liberal state. haha. :-p

They are really cool, though! Do you know what they I is about?

edit: and I don't think I need to. :)

The thingies on top of the building are cell phone antennae.

On the coexist bumper sticker... one of the GIS results explains them all. I am upset that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not included.

So, what do the cell phone antennae do? Boost the signal within the building or something? *has no clue*

I'd have to actually see how tall the building is, but typically in crowded areas cell providers utilize the top of tall buildings to increase their cellular range, sometimes simply by acting as repeaters, or actually having a ground line tied in there as well. Honestly the ground line idea makes more sense but I couldn't fathom them pumping out the money to run those kind of lines.

In Biloxi, Mississippi, Verizon's closest tower to Keesler AFB was actually on top of the IP, which is a local casino. :) But I've never actually been able to *see* those antennas... hrm.

only about 6-7 stories.
Aug. 12th, 2008 11:47 pm (UTC)
Those are the things your cell phone contacts.
Aug. 12th, 2008 11:53 pm (UTC)
Weird. So they are basically mini towers?
Aug. 13th, 2008 01:28 am (UTC)
They're the same things you find on cell towers.

I think if you believe in the flying spaghetti monster, it trumps the rest of the symbols.

You sure don't hear much from the flying spaghetti monster these days. Sad.
