I took two years of Spanish in high school and one year of Japanese in college, but I don't think this counts.

And of course I learned how to read Hebrew, but I don't understand anything other than the prayers. V. helpful.

I took four years of French in high school (I was even in honors French!) but somewhere in the last eight years, I forgot most of it. I just never kept up with it. I'd love to learn three or four different languages. I'm most interesting in refreshing my French, and then learning Spanish, Swedish, and Italian. I'd also LOVE to learn how to speak Russian, but it seems really hard/intimidating.

Nyet. Russian is soooo easy.

Or you would think it would be. Not that I speak it.

I speak a little French (three years of classes) and I can read Latin almost fluently, despite the fact that I never had any formal classes in it-- which was a shock to our Latin teacher on campus.

Romance languages for the win? I can read Moliere in french?

The odd thing is, when i first started learning Serbian, I would think in French when people spoke to me in Serbian. I think my brain went "Hey! That's not English!" and then thought in the non-English language it knew best. At this point, I know my Serbian is better because when I hear French, I think in Serbian.

You are awesome.

I took two years of Spanish in high school, and another semesters worth at UNC Chapel Hill before dropping out. I can do a few basic sentences/questions (i.e. if I get lost in Spain, I can ask for help, a bathroom, and the airport :P). I can also curse at people.

From all of my anime watching, I've picked up a minor smattering of Japanese phrases which I randomly throw out in coversations and my writing.

My mom taught me a few French cuss words as well :P

It is very important to be able to swear in multiple languages.

I'd like to think I speak almost fluent German. I started learning in the sixth grade, and I picked up my minor in it. I love speaking German, and I especially love confusing people who are native speakers by listening in on their conversations and then just asking them where in Germany they're from. :D That's happened to me twice - once walking back from a concert, the other in the airport.

I took French for 6 years then stupidly dropped it. I was really good at it too. Now I remember how to say "you are a hot guy" and that's about it. Yes, I remember the essential part of the language.

Then I took two years of German at university. I almost failed the second half of second year so no third year German for me, especially since the crazy German woman that hates me teaches the third year class.

And for the past three years I've been slowly learning Afrikaans. I can sing a mean Happy Birthday.

Oh, I should add that I'm pretty much useless at them all. When I try to think of the a word in one language I can usually figure it out in a language that is one of the two I don't want. And I have horrible accents in all 3 languages when I speak.

obviously fluent in german, and also a proud grammar nerd.
learned english in school for 6 years and french for 4 years. sadly I forgot almost everything in french.
and then I began teaching myself swedish a few years ago, but.. I didn't have the motivation to continue, really, so I only know a few words and easy sentences.

and I feel a bit alienesque being the only one not answering with "english" on that last question!

I have both swedish and german heritage so I know a tiny bit of both just from that. I always find it interesting how some parts of swedish are so similar to german and then some parts are SOOO different.

I took Spanish in High School then dropped it as soon as I could and still graduate. At this point in time, I can ask where the bathroom is and then not understand a word of the answer, so I'm calling this not speaking it in any useful way.

I can also say "No" in Russian and German (as well as a few sporadic other words in a handful of languages that I picked up from watching Hogan's Heroes or other tv shows), and count to four in Japanese, but these hardly count.
