Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present. There is each man as he sees himself, each man as the other person sees him, and each man as he really is.
-William James, psychologist and philosopher (1842-1910)

Do you think that people get an accurate "first impression" of you?

Do you think "first impressions" are important?

I feel like every person I know, knows me in a different way. So I am a different person to every person I know, based on how we interact and how much we trust each other/share with each other. There is only one person I share everything with, even my darkest side. Isn't he lucky?

I bet he thinks he's lucky. :-)

I agree with Liss. I think every person I know, too also knows me in a different way. I get a lot that I'm quiet if I'm out somewhere, but if I'm with another closer group of people some people say I talk so much. I think it depends on how much you let someone into your life, like...true friends or acquaintances.

I agree with the other two. It also depends on who you're meeting. If I'm meeting a random friend of my cousin I'm not going to have too much invested. On a date or a customer or something regarding employment would be a different story. They'd see professionalism, a meet-up group might see goofiness and fun-ness. Plus how do you even really know how someone 'sees' you unless they say so.

I mean, I'd like to ask everyone I know to name four adjectives to describe me and see if they line up. Maybe I even will. Survey-time! :-p

There was that meme website thing where people select adjectives... I forget what it was called, though. It's still around every once in a while.

I blame initial misconceptions about me on librarian stereotypes. When people hear that I'm a librarian, many of them either see this woman:

or this one:

LOL! Love the second picture. :-P

People generally get the wrong impression of me because I look so young. Especially if they see me on a casual day. My students told me the other day when I came dressed up to their final that I looked "older" and "more like I sound."

Of course they could have been making fun of my facebook status.

I'm pretty shy when meeting new people, so I've had a lot of people tell me that they actually thought I was snobby when they met me, when in fact, I'm open to everyone and want really badly to get to know people.

I also agree with Melissa - with people I already know, I'm a different person for each of them. The only person who knows me as I really, truly am is my best friend Patrick.

I'm the same way. This is why I think I don't have many close friends...it just takes me awhile to get comfortable around people enough to be "me"

I'm almost positive people do not get an accurate "first impression" of me because, like most people, I project a false image when meeting new people, particularly in the business realm. I project a different person to different people. My coworkers know one "Summer", people online know a fairly different one, real life friends a third one, family a fourth, etc etc. Probably the only ones who actually see, know, love, and accept me just as I really am are my babies cause I don't have to pretend with them and God (well, at least sees and knows - who knows on the other two).
