Magical food

Mom volunteered me to make soup for church tomorrow night. I didn't want to make what I made last time (turkey soup with rice), but I couldn't really decide what I wanted to make.

So, I've decided to make something up. So far ingredients are definitely going to include:
1 lb kidney beans
2+ cups spicy sausage, cut in quarters
Diced Tomatoes/Crushed Tomatoes/Tomato Sauce (Haven't decided how much of each)
1 cup uncooked rice
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, chopped

Okay, now I need opinions on other possibilities:
Chopped celery
Chopped carrots
bay leaves
basil
oregano
chili powder
cumin
thyme
cloves
paprika

What do you think? What should I definitely include or definitely not include? I'm not sure if this should lean towards cajun, italian, or mexican seasoning-wise.

If you add chili powder, cumin, and bay leaves, you will have a Chili Soup. yummmmy

I guess I would lean away from Cajun or Mexican, since those might be a little spicy for some people. Unless of course you know they all like spicy things. Or you don't care if they do or not. :)

So far, it seems like people like spicy (the last 2 church meals had chili that was pretty spicy and it was GONE). My ultimate goal is to end up with a yummy soup recipe to add to my recipe blog. I'll probably add whatever seasonings 1/4 tsp at a time so I can really control the flavor.
