Booo, trillian sucks

Depends what you're looking for. Chat logging, single point of status changes, skinnable, and no ads... works for me.

It's not particularly skinnable, but Gaim's logging is way ahead of Trillian's, last I looked.

Does it still only take text logs and leave you to skim through Notepad?

Chat logging kinda weirds me out.

I log all my IMs all the time. I'm still using AIM 4.3 because it was the last version of AIM that is compatible with AIM+ which I use for logging chats. But I think it's time to update. Up to know I didn't like the logging systems on anything but AIM+, but I think trillian has finally come up with something I can deal with. (no, I don't like gaim, I've tried it).

I don't mind when someone else does it, but I can't help but compare it to tape recording all of your vocal conversations.

Yeah I can see where that comes from, but can't think of any case where I used a chat log in a "See, you said this back then! Guilty!" sort of way. Instead, I find it handy just to find info like phone numbers and addresses people gave me long ago and I can't find anymore. Or even just to remember when a particular event in my life happened, like the first time I talked to a friend. If I could Google my chat logs, I'd be in heaven. :)

agreed! :-D

Not particularly skinnable? Compared to what?

Trillian's logging puts the most recent history right in a chat window when it pops up, in grayed-out text, so if you closer your windows frequently, you can tell what the heck a person is talking about just by scrolling up. For less recent history, pull up the full log as a text file, yes. Chat is text. Why shouldn't it be a text file? (And if you're still using Notepad, that's not Trillian's fault.)

Gaim isn't skinnable (sorry if you thought I meant Trillian) compared to WinAmp and Trillian, since the 'skins' are GTK themes.

As for the logging, gaim has a plugin for that, though I've never tried it. And the chat format is HTML, which makes sense since that's what the protocol (or at least all the clients I've seen) use for formatting.

The nice thing about gaim's built-in log reading is that you can view it by specific conversation, rather than searching through a huge log file.

I'd rather have one huge file, actually. Too many files would be harder to search (unless the interface does all that, in which case I don't care how it stores the files under the hood).

But one thing I don't like about Trillian's logging is that it only saves the timestamp as shown at the time of the conversation. So if you had it turned off... no times logged. That's rather useless. At least it does record the date/time that each session starts and ends though.
