looking for suggestions and ideas!

I'm thinking of getting a new LCD monitor.

What should I be looking at? What sites/stores are good to order from? Brands?

I'm thinking 19"+... don't know if I want to do the widescreen thing.

Here's what I use my computer for:
non-intensive games (roller coaster tycoon, solitare)
Movies (DVDs and YouTube-ish)
Graphics manip, photo stuff, web design

Hit me!

Edit: Looks like I may need to get a new video card, too... it's gotta be a PCI, but have digital connectors or whatever.

Beats me. I just stuck with Gateway, and got a 19". Of course it is also my first LCD, but it's been quite good (::knock on wood::) and I really like it. I also use it for basically the same stuff you do. The large size is particularly nice for Photoshop(ish) stuff. ::shrug:: It's this one.

Ruh-roh. Yeah, I meant to buy the digital connector, but never got around to checking stuff out to see if I my computer could handle it. I've just been using analog.

Personally I've always been drooling over the Samsung LCDs. They are some of the lowest in price, but seem to have high scores in all the right areas (for me) - response time (lower is better), various ratios... viewing angles, all that stuff. They're kinda droll looking on the outside, but the specs always seem to be pretty high.

Have you checked general hardware review sites? I think there might be sites dedicated to reviewing displays specifically.

Posting this entry is about as far as I've gotten. I thought, "oh, my lj family will have lots of input!" and then I posted. :-) Any links etc would be appreciated. :)

Really good place to start:

That'd be for the displays, but if you're looking into graphics cards as well, then:

Out of the Samsung monitors I like, since I have both analog and digital plugs but use a KVM switch, I stick with analog...
Samsung 970P, Samsung 940Be, and a few others.

Plus I can find them pretty cheap at Sam's Club, if I ever needed one. I really still do prefer CRT monitors though... I guess I just like having the brightness that I haven't found in a LCD.

Thanks, man! :-D

np :D Toms Hardware has like a 45 page review of 19" LCDs on the link I sent, that'd keep you busy for a long while, hehehe. ;P

Your "lj family"? Wow, dork!

my lj family

That's so... touching. :-p

Although I've never bought a flatscreen, I've used a few Dell ones that were pretty nice. Just a thought, but have you considered whether you want a widescreen one or not?

Re: widescreen
Whoops, I can't read. I offer up this Go tutorial site in penance:

Re: widescreen
I was just trying to decide if I should make fun of you or not. :-P I choose = not. =-O
What's that tutorial for? Go, the oldest game? I know how to play that! I should start playing that against the computer again... hm... wonder where that program went.

Re: widescreen
Phew! Dodged that bullet. Just for that, I think I'll transcribe your voice posts. :-p

One of my roommates ran across the Go tutorial several months ago. It looked like it might be fun, but I didn't have anyone to play with, so I never got into it.

Re: widescreen
You will rise on the totem pole of my lj family if you do. :-D

I dated a guy for a while (Saul, if you see this, yes, you have become the "guy I dated for a while") that played Go... he was amazing. He tried to teach me, but I never could wrap my little brain around it enough to actually get very far. It definitely messed with my mind, though. :-)

Joe just got a 19" from www.ecost.com it was a fuji and it is amazing, perfect for gaming and higly detailed pictures, it has a wide angle of viewability, everything is crystal clear, it allows for really high resolution and the colors appear correct.

I have a Sony LCD... it's last year's model, but it's really nice. Only down side is that it doesn't handle high refresh rates. Good luck on your hunt.
